Genetically modified food
Genetically modified food(see has quietly become second nature all over the world, experts say 60% to 70% of processed foods on U.S. grocery shelves have genetically modified ingredients, which many consumers are unaware of! Genetic Engineering(GE) is a technique to change the DNA or genetic make-up of living organisms, by mixing and matching genes from completely different species. Genetically Modified(GM) crops were introduced to have stronger resistance against pests and toincrease the yield. But on the contrary, most GM crops rely on toxic herbicides, usually manufactured by the same GE company, there by boosting their sales. The consequences:
1. Gene Pollution – loss of original seeds
2. Side effects & potential health hazards
3. Soil infertility
4. Reduction in yield over years
5. Farmers suicide
6. Economic imbalance
But with the rising awareness of the hazards of GMO now the promoters of conventional and GM crops with the herbicides that follow them are getting the taste of their own legal pot pourri. Recent law suit in the US has recently ruled if there is a large organic farm surrounded by chemically laced conventional farms then the organic farmers can seek damages for their lost crops, and the profits, which were caused by illegal trespassing of pesticides and herbicides on their property.
The only solution to potential risk to our health is switching to certified Organic foods which have Non- GMO label especially in the US. All other countries there is still no legislation for differentiating a GMO product. So our advice is to switch to native seed grown locally in the region which is altogether organically produced.
